Playa de Muro (Platja de Muro) in the northern part of the island was recently awarded third most beautiful beach in Europe in the TravellersChoice survey. And for good reason: with its fine white sand and turquoise water, it rivals any beach in the Caribbean. It is the central section of the approximately 30-kilometre-long sandy beach in the Bay of Alcudia, between Can Picafort and Puerto Alcudia. From the long, shady promenade lined with pine trees, you can reach the beach, which is particularly popular among families. The water is crystal clear, very shallow and there are rarely high waves, which makes it ideal for swimming with children. But water sports enthusiasts also get their money’s worth here. With offers like snorkeling, surfing, diving tours and paragliding, there is something for everyone. For those who prefer solid ground under their feet, there are several volleyball and beach volleyball courts. For all those seeking relaxation and gourmets, there are excellent restaurants on the long waterfront promenade and plenty of space to stroll under the shade of the palm trees.

Cala Pi – The romantic bay in the south of Mallorca

Besides long sandy beaches, Mallorca also has beautiful bays in its repertoire. One of these is Cala Pi, an idyllic and romantic sandy bay on the south coast of the island. With its crystal-clear, turquoise water and no waves, it is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island and is located in a fjord-like setting between 30-metre-high cliffs that rise up to the left and right. If you want to see the beauty of the bay for yourself, you should pack sturdy shoes for the journey, because it can only be reached via a stone staircase with 147 steps from the steep coast. But after the climb down, you are rewarded with an incomparable sight. Whitewashed boathouses with dark green-painted gates and the cliffs covered with pines, Aleppo pines, holm oaks and maquis create a Mediterranean flair with their different shades of green and provide a shady spot or two in the afternoon. Due to the strong curvature of the bay, you cannot see the sea 400 metres away, but you are protected from any wind and waves. In summer, there is a sunbed rental service on site, while a small beach bar provides the necessary refreshment. The beach is shallow and waveless – ideal for all diving enthusiasts to catch a glimpse of the animal underwater world of the Balearic island while snorkelling in the crystal-clear water.

Playa Es Trenc – The longest natural beach on the island

In our list of the most beautiful beaches on Mallorca, one should certainly not be missing: Playa Es Trenc. The dreamlike natural beach in the south of the island offers a backdrop that couldn’t be more beautiful: crystal-clear, azure water, hardly any waves, a wide white sandy beach and green pine trees and a flat dune landscape in the background. Playa Es Trenc stretches for 3 km between the towns of Ses Covetes and Colonia Sant Jordi, making it the longest natural beach on Mallorca. Once known as an insider tip for tranquillity and idyll, it is now one of the most popular beaches on the island. It offers something for everyone: the shallow entrance is ideal for families with children, while young couples, groups of friends and tourists enjoy the Caribbean flair. Locals appreciate it for its naturalness, as it has been under nature conservation since 2017 and is therefore one of the few beaches that has been spared from tourist development. Es Trenc is also very popular with nudists. In some sections there are services such as mobile beach bars or deckchair rental. The beach is ideal for lovers of the underwater world, as there is a lot to discover, especially in the western area. Here, you don’t need to worry about collisions with water sports enthusiasts, because this is not offered at Playa Es Trenc. Instead, luxurious yachts and catamarans sway on the calm waters and can be watched from the beach.

Cala Torta – A place for those seeking peace and quiet

Another idyllic beach away from the tourist hustle and bustle is located on the north coast of Mallorca, about 10 km from the town of Artá. Here, in the midst of a mountainous and natural landscape, is the bathing bay Cala Torta. Over a length of 130 metres and a width of 200 metres, you will find light, fine-grained sand here. Unlike most of the island’s beaches, the water here is quite steeply sloping, which makes it rather unsuitable for families with children. However, this makes it a perfect retreat for those seeking peace and quiet, as it is not so overcrowded , even in high season. The lack of services and water sports activities also ensures relaxation. There is only a small bar that offers snacks for the small hunger in between. In summer, Cala Torta is partially guarded. Nevertheless, you should swim rather carefully in strong north winds and the accompanying currents and high waves. For surfers though, these conditions are ideal. Due to its secluded and visibility-protected location, Cala Torta is also a real insider tip for followers of naturism. The access is as secluded and natural as the beach. A somewhat bumpy road leads you past small secluded bathing spots and breathtaking viewpoints. So plan some time here for photo stops. Cala Torta is perfect for those who just want to relax by the turquoise sea with Caribbean flair.

Playa Portals Vells – Mallorca’s beach jewel near Palma

In the hidden “three-finger bay” of Cala Portals Vells lies another beach jewel. Along with Cala del Mago and Caló dels Reis, Playa Portals Vells, the largest of the 3 bathing bays, is a paradise for nature lovers. Only a few kilometres southwest of Palma, it offers a completely different world from the island capital. Behind the picturesque beach rises a rocky landscape covered with pine trees, which covers the entire cape on the south-western tip of the island. The bumpy access to the bay also leads through this pine forest. If you take this walk, you will be rewarded with fantastic picture opportunities. On the fine sandy beach, there is no developed tourist infrastructure apart from a beach bar where you can buy refreshing cocktails and which also has toilets. Instead of a beach promenade and benches, you will find quiet shady spots under pine trees and a fine sand beach that leads shallowly into the sea. Since the bay is framed by rocks and therefore protected from strong winds and water currents, it offers excellent conditions for snorkelling and diving. Highlights of the bay include an underwater reef inhabited by corals that lies just below the water surface, and for the adventurous there are several small underwater caves to discover. The beach away from all houses and hotels, in the middle of the bird sanctuary, is suitable for those who want to escape the summer tourist crowds. Therefore, Playa Portals Vells is also very popular among locals.

Cala Mondragó – A dreamlike bay in the middle of untouched nature

Last but not least, we would like to recommend the beautiful playa of Cala Mondragó. It is located between two rocky outcrops, about 400 m from its better-known sister cove, S’Amarador, on Mallorca’s beautiful south-east coast. The beach, which has been awarded the blue flag for its outstanding quality, is 75m long and about 60m wide and is picturesquely framed by pine trees and rocks. The sand is very fine and white and slopes gently into the crystal clear and sparkling sea. The bay and its surrounding area were declared a nature park in 1992 and is therefore largely unspoilt, but it still offers good services. Visitors can rent sunbeds and umbrellas here, but will also find plenty of space to spread out their towel on the soft sand. There are two restaurants and two beach bars on site, where you can buy snacks, drinks, tapas and Mallorcan food. The beach is not designed for mass tourism, which means that on the one hand it is very quiet, but on the other hand there are no big water sports on offer. In addition, there are no showers and only a few mobile toilets available here.It is advisable to pack a good book or snorkelling equipment for the beach day. Cala Mondragó is very popular with both locals and tourists who want to escape the daily hustle and bustle. Framed by pine forests, you can spend time here enjoying the natural beauty and tranquillity that is disturbed by music or water sports enthusiasts on other beaches. So it was not a coincidence that the beach of Cala Mondragó was voted Europe’s “best beach” in 2008.
