The big dream of a wedding in Mallorca

For many couples, a wedding is the most beautiful day of their lives. Breathtaking backdrops, a gorgeous wedding dress and celebrating with the whole family. This day should be something very special, which should be remembered forever. For this reason, a wedding on one of the most beautiful islands is the perfect choice. Mallorca has countless unique wedding locations and a very special flair. Whether the dream of a wedding on the beach or on an idyllic finca, Mallorca offers everything.

What are the requirements for a wedding ceremony in Mallorca?

The requirements for a wedding vary, as there are different forms. Free weddings are becoming more and more popular. There are no special requirements for a free wedding on Mallorca. However, it should be noted that a free wedding ceremony is not legally binding. As with a church wedding, the couple must also say “I do” at the registry office. In order to celebrate a civil wedding, the couple must fulfil the following requirements:

  • One of the fiancés is a resident of Spain.
  • One of the fiancés has been registered in Spain for at least 3 months.
  • One of the fiancés has the Residencia, which proves that he or she is registered in the Foreigners´ Register.

A church wedding is also possible in Mallorca if you want to say ‘I do’ in front of God. The variety of stunning churches and chapels to choose from are a dream. Both the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches in Germany allow couples to be married abroad. However, there are also different rules or requirements for each denomination.

Protestant wedding

The special thing about Protestant weddings is that they do not necessarily have to take place in a consecrated place. There are no Protestant churches on Mallorca itself. For this reason, priests rent Catholic churches as desired. There is a wide variety of locations: from small chapels to cathedrals, restaurants, fincas or other special places with a view of the sea, everything is possible. Both partners do not necessarily have to be Protestant. Since God’s blessing applies to all love, most pastors also marry same-sex couples.

Catholic wedding

In this country, the German-speaking Catholic community is somewhat stricter in its choice of venues. The special thing about Catholic weddings is that they can only take place in a sacred place. Weddings are only possible in approved Catholic churches that belong to an island parish. Chapels in the Tramuntana that have been privately built, as well as private hotel or finca chapels, are not included. These locations are not approved by the bishop. The Ermita de Portals Nous is extremely popular. Due to its location directly above the beach, couples particularly like to get married there. Many churches in Palma are also popular with couples because they are home to the best organs in the world. It is usually no problem to let doves fly in front of the church or to have flower children scatter flowers. Throwing rice, however, is undesirable.

Which location for the perfect wedding?

The big dream for many couples is to get married on the beach. The thought of a wedding ceremony in the sand at sunset is on many people’s minds. In reality, however, it is not so easy. Beach weddings are not actually possible, as the first 250 metres of dry land belong to the Spanish navy. There are occasional exceptions, but in most cases it is not possible. On Mallorca it is not allowed to set up on public beaches. Beach weddings are therefore only possible in a small way, in connection with a beach bar or beach club. For some years now, the island authorities and environmentalists such as the GOB association have been even more meticulous in ensuring that nature reserves such as the dunes of Es Trenc beach are protected. However, beach ceremonies with 20 to 30 people in cooperation with chiringuitos are no problem. In return, the establishments are guaranteed a minimum turnover. If it is not possible to get married directly on the beach, you can easily rent a beach bar or similar, which is almost directly on the beach.

Furthermore, many people do not consider an important point: in the high season, you will not find a beach that is not overcrowded. However, this does not have to be a reason not to get married on Mallorca. Mallorca has an incredible number of locations to offer for a perfect wedding. Meanwhile, more and more couples are coming up with the idea of spending their wedding on a typical Mallorcan finca in the countryside or a luxurious villa. This can optimally combine island flair and a breathtaking sea view. Whether you are looking for a wedding with a lot of luxury or without a lot of fuss, there is a wide variety of villas to choose from.

The wedding season on Mallorca is summer. However, if you decide to have a wedding in Mallorca in the summer, you should be aware of the high temperatures. Especially in July and August it can get very hot on the island. Then it is especially important to take care of your guests and yourself. Simple things like water bottles, pretty fans and parasols can work wonders. In addition, sufficient shade and seating should be provided.
